US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.
