Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
