There are "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has announced.
Recently the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the Ukraine conflict.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".
The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.
Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Certain accounts indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting the president had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.
Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.
"Freeze the lines where it stands," he stated.
Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.
Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.
The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.
Zelensky commented discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.
He further commented the sole subject that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.
Putin's unscheduled call with Trump last Thursday came ahead of reports that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.
Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
