Former FBI director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
His legal representative filed the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.
The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the proceedings terminated for several causes including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.
Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald told the magistrate they intended to file multiple petitions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to take over the proceedings.
Mr Comey's case was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his examination into another political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.
The former director seemed in good spirits as he walked into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, his wife and child Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.
Upon hearing to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.
James Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's first administration as president. At the time, he was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
While in office, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he announced just days before the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.
Government attorneys allege the former director lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations data about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, hinder and impede" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
Via social media Mr Comey published to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was innocent and accused Donald Trump of acting like a "dictator".
"My family and I have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."
These allegations against James Comey surfaced after the former president shared on social media calling for his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
