Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
