Norway's star striker Secures Global Tournament Place for the Norwegian squad

Erling Haaland netted a dozen strikes in Norway's last four World Cup qualifying matches

Generational marksman Erling Haaland will get a chance to play in his initial international competition in the upcoming season, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

And the 25-year-old Premier League striker did it in outstanding performance, netting 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches - netting at least once in each of those matches.

This establishes him as the top scorer in 2026 World Cup preliminary stage in every region.

And his squad's 4-1 win in Italy on Sunday, where Haaland scored twice, means they will be participating in next summer's World Cup in North America.

Haaland, speaking following the match: "I'm pleased, but more relieved. There's significant pressure and things, and I sense it. But it's enjoyable."

It will be just their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since the 2000 Euros.

The Crucial Role Was Haaland's Contribution?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is absolutely remarkable.

He has scored 55 goals in 48 matches for the national team.

Additionally he is only the sixth player ever, and the initial one in over five decades, to score 50 goals in less than 50 appearances.

Norway's previous highest scorer was Jorgen Juve with 33 goals, who maintained that achievement for nine decades.

During these qualifying matches he scored 16 goals - in eight games - plus two assists.

That is double the goal count any other player has netted in UEFA matches.

He stands as the leading goalscorer in these qualifiers in every region, including ones where teams play twice as more games.

Beyond a full year has passed since Haaland last failed to score in a match for his country.

Squad Contribution Beyond Haaland

But it is not just a one-man show.

Team leader Martin Odegaard, 26, has greater goal contributions than anyone else in European qualifying - seven.

The Arsenal midfielder has featured in 67 matches for Norway since his initial cap at the age of 15.

"Merge Haaland's accomplishments with the truth that in this period we also have Martin Odegaard," commented a football expert.

We're a country of five million citizens and we have both the premier attacker and I'd suggest the best playmaker, definitely among the top creators, in the English top flight.

Historical Relevance of Qualification

For the first time in a generation Norway supporters will enjoy the pleasure of cheering their squad in global competition.

Norway participated in the World Cups in 1994, 1998 and 1938, and the 2000 European Championship.

Erling's dad, Alf-Inge Haaland, participated in the 1994 World Cup.

Erling has previously said exceeding his dad represented a significant personal target for him.

"Norway will cannot win the World Cup," Haaland Jr told a global media outlet earlier this year.

Avoiding Historical Exclusion

Haaland heading to the global tournament with Norway means he avoids his inclusion on the roster of legendary footballers who never featured in one.

Three golden ball recipients never managed to participate in the global tournament.

The African icon, who secured titles with Monaco, PSG, AC Milan and Chelsea, represented Liberia - who haven't qualified for a World Cup.

Legendary Red Devils attacker the footballing genius, viewed by plenty as among the best ever, was a Northern Irish representative during the 1960s and 70s when they couldn't secure qualification.

Los Blancos icon the footballing pioneer played for three nations - Colombia, Spain and Argentina - but couldn't reach a World Cup with any of them.
