Old Fishing Nets from France Evolve into Essential Protection To Counter Russian Drones in the War Zone

Along the port areas of the Breton shoreline, accumulations of old nets stand as a familiar view.

The usable duration of deep-sea fishing nets generally extends between 12 and 24 months, after which they become worn and beyond repair.

Presently, this horsehair netting, once used to trawl monkfish from the marine bottom, is finding new application for a different kind of capture: Russian drones.

Humanitarian Initiative Repurposes Discarded Gear

A Breton charity has dispatched two deliveries of nets totaling 280km to Ukraine to defend soldiers and civilians along the combat zone where fighting is fiercest.

Russia employs inexpensive unmanned aircraft armed with detonation devices, guiding them by radio command for spans of up to 25 kilometers.

"Since the conflict began, the war has mutated. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a aerial combat conflict," commented a aid distribution manager.

Tactical Implementation of Trawling Gear

Military personnel use the nets to construct tunnels where drone propellers become entangled. This method has been compared to arachnids capturing insects in a web.

"Our contacts have informed us they cannot use any old nets. They received numerous that are of no use," the organizer added.

"The materials we provide are made of horse hair and used for marine harvesting to catch powerful sea creatures which are quite powerful and hit the nets with a power comparable to that of a drone."

Expanding Implementations

Initially deployed by healthcare workers defending field hospitals near the combat zone, the nets are now being used on roads, crossings, the entrances to hospitals.

"It's incredible that such basic material works so well," observed the charity president.

"There is no shortage of marine gear in this region. It creates difficulty to know what to do with them as various companies that process the material have closed."

Operational Challenges

The humanitarian group was established after community members contacted the founders requesting support for essential provisions and healthcare materials for communities back home.

A team of helpers have driven two lorry consignments of humanitarian assistance 2,300 kilometers to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.

"Upon discovering that Ukraine needed nets, the coastal residents acted promptly," commented the humanitarian coordinator.

Drone Warfare Progression

Russia is using real-time visual vehicles comparable to those on the commercial market that can be piloted by distance operation and are then loaded with combat charges.

Enemy operators with instant visual data steer them to their objectives. In various locations, Ukrainian forces report that no movement occurs without drawing the notice of clusters of "destructive" suicide aircraft.

Defensive Methods

The trawling material are extended across supports to create netting tunnels or used to cover trenches and vehicles.

Ukrainian drones are also outfitted with pieces of netting to release onto enemy drones.

By July this year, Ukraine was confronting more than 500 drones each twenty-four hour period.

Global Aid

Substantial quantities of used fishing gear have also been contributed by marine workers in Nordic countries.

A previous fishing organization leader declared that coastal workers are more than happy to assist the military campaign.

"They experience satisfaction to know their discarded equipment is going to assist in protection," he stated publicly.

Financial Challenges

The association has exhausted the monetary means to dispatch additional materials this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to dispatch vehicles to collect the material.

"We shall assist acquire the material and prepare them but we lack the monetary resources to continue running convoys ourselves," explained the humanitarian coordinator.

Practical Restrictions

A Ukrainian military spokesperson explained that anti-drone net tunnels were being implemented across the eastern territory, about three-quarters of which is now stated as captured and administered by opposition military.

She added that enemy drone pilots were progressively discovering ways to penetrate the mesh.

"Mesh does not represent a universal remedy. They are just one element of defense from drones," she emphasized.

An ex-agricultural business owner described that the people he interacted with were moved by the help from maritime regions.

"The circumstance that those in the fishing industry the distant part of the continent are providing material to support their defensive measures has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he finished.
