Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association declared it did not want to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums on matchdays. While its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
The region is home to a significant most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
