The Former President's Policies Pose a Threat to Civilization.

The internal and external initiatives – including the challenge to the democratic process previously to recent actions and warnings – undermine both domestic and international legal frameworks. But that’s not all.

These actions jeopardize the fundamental meaning of civilization itself.

A moral purpose of civilized society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the vulnerable. Without this, we could find ourselves permanently immersed in a state of nature where survival of the strongest wins.

This principle lies at the center of the nation's founding texts. It’s also the core of the global system established after WWII championed by the US, emphasizing multilateralism, democracy, human rights, and the legal authority.

However, it is a fragile construct, easily violated by those who choose to misuse their authority. Upholding it necessitates that the powerful have a sense of duty to refrain from seeking temporary advantages, and that the public demand responsibility when they fail.

Unfettered might is not right. It makes for turmoil, upheaval, and war.

Whenever people or corporations or countries that are advantaged attack and exploit those that are weaker, the fabric of our shared norms weakens. If these actions are allowed to continue, the structure collapses. Without intervention, the world can plunge into disorder and conflict. History provides ample precedent.

Today, we live in a global community with deepening divides. Political and economic power are more concentrated than in modern history. This encourages the elite to exploit the disadvantaged because they perceive themselves as omnipotent.

The fortunes of a small group of tycoons is almost beyond comprehension. The reach of major corporations in technology, energy, and aerospace extends over much of the globe. AI is poised to consolidate economic and political clout to a greater degree. The military might of the major powers is without parallel in human history.

Supported by political allies and a sympathetic supreme court, the highest office has been turned into the supreme and answerable-to-none agent of state power in recent memory.

Put it all together and you see the danger.

A direct line connects previous lawless actions to ongoing provocations. These were based on the hubris of invincibility.

You see a similar pattern in other global contexts: in military conflicts, in expansive ambitions, and in the rampant monopolization by industrial titans.

Yet, raw power does not establish right. It fosters fragility, revolution, and bloodshed.

History shows that rules and conventions to limit the influential also protect them. If these guardrails are removed, their endless appetite for greater influence and riches ultimately lead to their downfall – and with them their enterprises, countries, or domains. And pave the way for international catastrophe.

This blatant disregard for rules will haunt international stability – and the very idea of a rules-based order – for the foreseeable future.
