Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the graphically gory as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director crafted a grim, melancholy and frequently brutal universe that included some tiny , forlorn glimmers of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to expand the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was actually an effort to express a universal, multicultural theme regarding “the shared root of each battle.”
That message is conveyed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly modeled after a popular series of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a society focused on militarism as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of these creatures are fixated on slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book that tells the bears they were once kings of the woods, until these creatures forced them out.
Others did not entirely bought into the brainwashing, , prefer to try out narcotics or mate outdoors.
In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these vivid animals display sexual organs , definite sex drives.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the conflict against the unicorns turns into a road to power — and particularly to supremacy above his more tender, more compassionate sibling Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an apparent sociopath , and while fear dominates his group and kills his comrades sequentially, he seizes increasingly control personally, via progressively gory, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are experiencing their own nightmare, through an expanding, deadly beast in their woods.
“At the beginning, it appears as a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “But then it becomes a more serious and sad movie. And in the finale, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars starts out feeling a bit like one of the more whimsical films by a legendary filmmaker, that discover a wicked pleasure in letting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it turns into something more like a darker work from that director, with increasingly explicit brutality , a palpable relation to the real tragedy of conflict.
In the finale, it’s a full-on Grand Guignol massacre.
The horror which makes the film a Halloween-friendly movie begins much sooner than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore gorehounds, for fans of graphic films who desire to see something they have not viewed until now, and can endure a plot that pulls absolutely no punches.
View it with the lights off with no disturbances, and the conclusion will crawl under your skin and take up residence there.
