The Israeli government Gives Green Light to Nineteen Fresh Outposts in Occupied Palestinian Territories

Israel's defense cabinet has formally approved the recognition of nineteen new communities in the disputed Palestinian territories, representing a sustained campaign for community development.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and put forward the step alongside Defense Chief Israel Katz, declared that the decision was about thwarting the formation of a sovereign Palestine.

According to global statutes, Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are deemed illegal.

The move has drawn condemnation from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "persistent" growth of communities heightens frictions, curtails Palestinians' use of territory, and undermines the viability of a independent Palestine.

Increased Tensions and Political Fallout

Violence in the region has surged since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip started in the autumn of 2023, intensifying concerns that the growth of communities could deepen Israel's occupation and damage the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution envisions the formation of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, largely along the lines that were in place prior to the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.

Since taking office in late 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has significantly increased the authorization of new settlements and initiated the formal recognition for previously illegal settler outposts, designating them as "suburbs" of existing settlements.

Sustained Expansion

The latest decision takes the overall count of settlements authorized over the preceding 36 months to 69, per the figures from the Finance Minister.

These authorizations are announced just days after the UN said that settlement expansion had hit its highest level since the year 2017.

The latest group of authorizations includes the revival of a pair of communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated nearly 20 years ago.

Earlier this year, Israel approved 22 additional settlements in the occupied West Bank - what was the largest wave of approvals in many years.

In a related development, the Israeli government gave the go-ahead for blueprints in August to erect over three thousand homes in the so-called E1 project between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, a plan that had been frozen for many years amid strong foreign objection.

On that occasion, Smotrich said it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."

Population Realities and Global Reactions

An estimated seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers live in about one hundred and sixty communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is land that Palestinians aspire to have for a prospective sovereign nation.

Settlement expansion has provoked neighboring countries who have steadfastly contended it erodes hopes for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has also raised concerns about the potential incorporation of the disputed territories.

Ex- American President Donald Trump had previously cautioned Israel about annexation, stating to TIME magazine that the country would forfeit all its support from the US if it occurred.

In a diplomatic shift, the United Kingdom - along with other countries such as Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a major although primarily ceremonial change in official stance.

The Israeli government was against the move, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a Palestinian state "will not happen."
