British authorities has added eleven further nations to its travel warning register concerning the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.

This expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.

Just recently, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after a number of high-profile incidents like the deadly loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a harmful chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

However in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Advice for Travelers

Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official said.

"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor fast."

The entire register of countries noted as posing a risk of industrial alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
