UN Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Prior to Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his White House visit the coming week.

He was appointed provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and supportive states for their support the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

After the meeting, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting is not the president's debut journey to America during this period. During September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
